Kar Community Based Organization is registered with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development. Kar was founded in 2012 with the mission to improve the lives of people, especially youth, from the community (Rachuonyo South District) through informal educational processes, by using research based knowledge and through promoting democracy and participation focused on the promotion and appreciation of rural life, the ecology of the area and conservation of land and resources over the long run.

Diversity in a society is the chief engine for development. With the high number of talented people, natural resources and

expertise within the location, it is very fundamental to tap into the resources to be able to recover the lost quality of land and water, create a vibrant and diverse economy within the locality through research and modernization of traditional methods of production.

The management committee of Kar CBO consists of dedicated individuals duly elected at the annual general meeting.

Working within Tende catchments since the inception has shed light on the state of affairs in several parts. There are a number of groups that have ongoing projects that would be enhanced, refined and structurally established to achieve more in terms of community development.

Kar therefore took the initiative to bring the groups together as affiliate groups to the Kar CBO to share in ideas, progresses and other pertinent resources to maximize the results from the projects, build capacity of the group members and to encourage participatory projects and decision making.

There are already 26 membership groups that have come together with similar missions and visions to work together under Kar CBO, embracing cross participation, joint sub-projects, appreciate and uplift women involvement for the betterment of social co-existence, community awareness, embrace technological and modern working techniques.

Kar's affiliate groups have a total of 592 members, youths and old, women and men. The composition consists of 255 males and 337 females all from within Kasipul Division.

The main driving force behind working together is to collectively improve land and water management through community awareness campaigns, creating links and create cohesive working relationships with government and non-government agencies, enhance individual and group participation and to increase the capacity of groups.

Kar CBO has verified the authenticity of the groups, their registration with the Government of Kenya (GoK), their memberships, and management committees, current and planned activities and how each one of them contributes to better management of water and land resources. The groups carry out diversified activities that together have the shared mission of improving the lives of the people through sustainable environmental practices and economic stability. Some of the activities involves the reduction of eucalyptus along the catchment area, river bank protection, rehabilitation of gullies, reclamation and rehabilitation of wetlands, fish farming, bee keeping, fireless cookers, horticultural farming, cover-cropping and planting of environmental friendly trees.

Some of the projects that are already underway that are directly implemented by Kar CBO are, fish farming, agro-forestry with over 10,000 diverse species of tree seedlings, bakery, diary farming, piped water projects, (in)formal talents development programme (academy development).

Furthermore Kar CBO has developed close working relationships with the Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture (fishery department), Ministry of (Higher) Education, diverse Primary and Secondary Schools in Rachuonyo South, KARI, the DO, chiefs in the area, the churches and the elders in the initiation, organization and implementation of diverse Kar CBO activities.
